Willow’s Story
When Willow Dail entered the world in 2020, her parents, Mark and Erika, knew immediately that their lives had changed forever. Born with a rare condition (Trisomy 12p), Willow faced challenges that few could predict. In those first days, the Dails were filled with love for their newborn daughter – and also uncertainty. Mark remembers holding tiny Willow in the hospital, whispering to her that she was perfect, even as doctors explained the uphill journey ahead.
The Inspiration Behind the Mission
Erika recalls the mix of joy and fear, “We didn’t know exactly what Willow would need, but we knew we would be there for her every step of the way.” As Willow grew, her strength and spirit became evident. She giggled at silly faces, reached for her favorite toys, and charmed everyone with her bright smile. But alongside these typical toddler moments came extraordinary challenges. Willow’s condition affected her development in many ways, requiring therapies, special equipment, and constant care. Mark and Erika quickly learned a profound truth: the world is not always built for a child like Willow.
Challenges in Everyday Places
Recognizing the Gaps
As new parents of a child with complex needs, Mark and Erika started encountering unexpected obstacles in everyday places. A simple trip to the park highlighted a painful reality: the playground had no swings or equipment that Willow could, including the ADA accessible equipment. Family outings were cut short by the lack of an inclusive changing table in public restrooms – forcing them to change Willow in the backseat of the car, public table, or bathroom floor. These moments opened the Dail family’s eyes to a world of invisible barriers. They realized Willow wasn’t the only one affected – thousands of families face similar challenges, feeling excluded not by lack of love or effort, but by the way public spaces are designed. Mark and Erika thought, “If only more places had the simple things we need, like a larger changing table or an adaptive swing, we wouldn’t have to choose between staying home or risking discomfort.”
The Birth of Willow’s Wish: Turning Challenges into Hope
Rather than accept these obstacles as “just how things are,” Mark and Erika decided to be the change their daughter needed. In 2023, fueled by love for Willow and hope for her future, they founded Willow’s Wish Foundation. What began as a personal journey blossomed into a mission for an entire community. The idea was simple but powerful: if a playground or a restroom isn’t accessible to Willow, then it isn’t truly accessible to anyone. And if something could help Willow, it could help countless others, too.
They gathered family, friends, and neighbors around their cause. Stories poured in from other parents who had felt the same frustrations. It became clear that Willow was not alone – and that meant an opportunity to create widespread change. “We realized we could do more than help just our little girl; we could improve the lives of so many families like ours,” Erika says. With that in mind, Willow’s Wish Foundation set out to bridge the gaps they had witnessed firsthand.
Our Mission & Impact: Bridging the Gap for Many
Today, Willow’s Wish Foundation works tirelessly to create the inclusive environments that Willow and so many others need. By installing an inclusive changing table in a public library, we’re telling families, “You are welcome here.” By adding a wheelchair-accessible swing to a playground, we’re ensuring every child can share the joy of play. By providing adaptive equipment to a family’s home, we’re turning feelings of isolation into comfort and inclusion.
We partner with schools, parks, and businesses to advocate for these changes. Because everyone deserves to live with dignity and to be included. When a city installs an inclusive restroom or a school upgrades its playground, it’s not just infrastructure – it’s a message that people like Willow belong. And the impact has already begun to ripple outwards. Caregivers who once had to plan outings around the next diaper change can now stay longer at the zoo or museum. Children who watched from the sidelines can now swing beside their friends. These victories may seem “small” to some, but to the families living them, they are life-changing milestones.
